About Benzoyl Peroxide
If you’re struggling with pimples or blemishes, the 5% benzoyl peroxide formulation in Benzagel® is the most effective acne-fighting ingredient you can get without a prescription. Benzoyl peroxide helps to clear up acne in two big ways.
First, it works by adding oxygen to the skin. The red inflammation you see around acne pimples is caused by a bacterium called P. acnes, which can’t live in the presence of oxygen. So introducing oxygen to your affected pores is how benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that cause acne inflammation.
The other cool thing about benzoyl peroxide is that it helps remove excess oils from your skin, and removes the dead skin cells that clog pores. Blocked pores lead to comedones that can become blackheads–or the dreaded whiteheads–so unclogging your pores is an important step in relieving acne!
One issue some users may have with benzoyl peroxide is that, especially for those with sensitive skin, it occasionally causes redness and stinging. A good idea is to use it sparingly at first, and if you feel irritation start your routine with every second day until your skin adapts to the treatment, gradually building to twice a day (not more).
Another thing you should know about benzoyl peroxide is it acts as a bleach. For instance, if you use coloured face towels, you need to make sure you have thoroughly rinsed off your skin before you dry your face, or you will get unsightly bleach spots on the towel. It’s best to use only white towels when you are applying any benzoyl peroxide treatment. And, of course, avoid getting it on coloured clothing!
