“Why do I need moisturizer for my face? Won’t it just make my skin oily?”

Generally, moisturizer is not considered essential for the care of acne prone skin. Over production of oil (sebum) is one of the underlying causes of acne and applying greasy products, including heavy moisturizers and cosmetics, can cause or aggravate acne lesions.

However, if you do wish to use moisturizers or sunscreens, choose ones that are light and labelled as non-comedogenic (this means they won’t clog your pores).

As well, there are some oil-free moisturizers available that contain anti-bacterial agents, which can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. If you are using a medicated product and have oily skin, you might want to choose a gel or solution formulation over a cream, lotion or ointment. Gels and solutions can have drying effects.
