The Common Unknown Causes of Breakouts

Most people know about the common causes of acne breakouts; touching your face, fluctuating hormones, eating greasy food, etc. However, there are other causes of breakouts that most people are not aware of. There are certain patterns you could be repeating on a daily basis that can cause you to break out or can even exacerbate your already annoying issue.

Here are some of the most surprising triggers that you can start taking care of today!

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is a major factor in skin dryness, which can ultimately lead to breakouts. Cold, artificial air isn’t the least bit friendly to your skin. When the skin is lacking in moisture, it can go into oil production overload, which leads to those pesky blemishes. Spending all your time indoors – whether it’s at home, in class, or at the office – can easily lead to frequent breakouts.

The best solution, if you are required to spend a lot of time indoors, is to place a humidifier in the room to bring moisture back in!

Hot Showers

We tend to shower to keep our skin clean and blemish-free. Cranking up the temperature in your shower is a great way to start the day or relax after a long one, especially when the weather is colder. Unfortunately, this is something you should avoid doing frequently. Hot water is incredibly drying, and dryness leads to breakouts. Here’s how it works: cold water tightens the skin’s pores, which doesn’t allow the natural secretion of acne-causing bacteria. On the other hand, hot water opens pores and leaves it prone to further irritation.

An important tip to keep in mind: if your skin is turning red, it’s time to either end your shower or lower the temperature.

Try keeping the water lukewarm in your shower and see if you notice a change!

Skipping Meals

Missing a meal means missing out on key vitamins and nutrients that your body (and skin) need in order to thrive. By not getting proper nutrition, your skin can lose elasticity and dry out. On top of that, there’s the issue of blood sugar. Keeping blood sugar balanced is important to avoid the spikes that cause breakouts.

Lastly, there’s the psychological issue: when you skip meals it’s easy to snack on bread and other foods that lead to high blood sugar, which then leads to breakouts.

Do your skin a favour and keep a consistent meal schedule!

Not Cleaning Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes harbor a ton of bacteria, so essentially every time you apply makeup to your face you’re applying all that bacteria and it gets worse over time. On top of that, with every application, your brushes and sponges collect oil, dust, dead skin, and residual makeup. If not regularly and properly cleaned, these tools can re-deposit these less-than-pleasant substances back on your face, clogging your pores.

To prevent this from happening, make sure to wash your brushes at least once a week with mild shampoo and warm water!

Taking the time to notice the little things you do throughout the day can go a long way in maintaining healthy and beautiful skin. Each entry on the list can be taken care of starting today! If you start addressing these minor lifestyle changes, you may just find your overall health improves as well!

Face Mapping Acne Problem Areas

You can learn a lot about your overall health based on where pimples pop up on your face. More importantly, you can learn what you can do to solve the problem based on acne patterns you see over time.

If you find that your pimples are popping up in more or less the same spots each month, then it’s likely that your body is trying to tell you something. The location of your breakouts can also help alert you to what type of acne you have, whether it’s basic acne or the hormonal kind, both of which require different treatments

We will focus on the main areas where pimples tend to appear: between the brows, cheeks, nose, and chin. Each area can have different acne triggers and different solutions.

Jaw and Chin

If you frequently experience breakouts on the bottom part of your face around your chin and jaw, it most likely has something to do with your hormones. Hormones can over-stimulate the oil glands and clog pores where the acne bacteria grow. The oil is the problem, but the true cause is more complicated. Hormones don’t directly cause acne, but hormonal imbalances do. This is why puberty is a common time for experiencing acne breakouts, and why it’s so important to keep your skin clean.

A hormone-related breakout might also occur about 7 to 10 days before a woman’s period. So in the days before your period, try to pay extra attention to your skin care.

Edges of the Face

If you frequently experience breakouts around the edges of your face, the typical culprit is beauty products and makeup clogging your pores. Sometimes people forget to clean these areas and the makeup gathers. You can try switching up your beauty routine for a few weeks to incorporate more natural products and see if you notice any skin improvements. Breaking out along the hairline, near the ears, or in the cheek area can also fall into the hormonal acne category, although far less likely.

Keep in mind that this area of the face is also where people touch with their hands throughout the day without thinking about it, which can spread oil and dirt around.

Cheeks

If you find you have acne on your cheeks, it’s more than likely related to your diet. The most probable culprit? You’re eating too many sweets.

Acne in this area can be a sign of high sugar consumption. Cleaning up your diet and limiting your intake of the sweet stuff may help cheek breakouts clear up. You should also be aware of how close you’re holding your phone to your face. If you spent time in the city, had to sit in traffic for hours, or otherwise came into contact with polluted air, that may explain pimples showing up here.

Forehead

If you get flare-ups in the forehead area, the probable cause is that you’re stressed or sleep-deprived. The secondary cause may be that or have digestive or liver issues. Forehead acne is one of the more difficult problem areas since it appears to have the strongest ties to other sections of your body. The first plan of attack, in this case, should be to bring your stress level down and get more sleep, especially if you’re going through acute periods of stress like exams or planning an important event.

As for the secondary strategy, pimples on the forehead area are sometimes a sign from your digestive system, and they may be a clue that your body is having a hard time breaking down certain foods. Greasy, fatty foods may be connected to acne here, or previously unknown food allergies. Stick with healthy choices as much as you can and consult a nutritionist if possible! Lastly, make sure you’re getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Nose

Do you find you have pimples around the center of your face, especially around your nose? The most likely reason is your face is producing too much oil.

The middle of your T-zone—forehead, nose, and down to the chin region—is generally a bit slicker because it has more oil glands than the rest of the face. That makes it prone to blackheads and whiteheads, and many experience breakouts on their nose itself. The best solution to this is to seek out standard skin care products and keep your face washed and clean so the oil doesn’t build up. As you could imagine, wiping oil away from this area into other areas could cause problems.

As you can see, each area of the face can experience breakouts for different reasons, including everything from diet to natural oils. If you’re aware of these facts and notice trends in your acne, you can take preventative measures so when random breakouts occur they won’t be nearly as severe and can be treated with products such as Benzagel’s acne family.

Are There Unhelpful Chemicals Hidden in Your Skin Care Routine?

Most individuals dealing with frequent acne breakouts are aware of the everyday offenders that trigger them, whether it be hormones, stress or diet. Through experience these triggers can become somewhat predictable and in some cases manageable with lifestyle changes.

But what about the less obvious culprits? Currently on the market there are seemingly innocent cosmetic and skin care products using chemicals that not only irritate sensitive skin, but can trigger breakouts.

That is why we have put together this list of the not so obvious ingredients you should be on the lookout for when purchasing cosmetics or skin care products.

Parabens

Parabens refer to a selection of chemicals found in many acne cleansing products, and are used mainly as a preservative. The most common Parabens you’ll find are as follows:

  • Butylparaben is one of the most common bactericidal/fungicidal additives in both acne cleansers and cosmetics. It has been used in cosmetic products since the 1940s and in pharmaceutical products since 1924.
  • Isobutylparaben is found in many skin care products, ranging from skin cream to acne prevention to deodorant. This is a less frequently used preservative, but can still be found in a few cleansers.
  • Another lesser-seen Paraben found in some anti-acne cleansers is Propylparaben, used for a similar reason but is also linked to skin irritation especially with sensitive skin.

Basically, look for anything that ends with “-paraben” and avoid it.

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinyl palmitate is considered an exfoliator and its effect of repeatedly shedding the upper layer of skin forces the skin to produce new cells.

This can have a damaging effect on sensitive skin, and we typically want to avoid products that damage the upper layers of skin.

Triclosan

Triclosan is the most controversial ingredient on this list because Health Canada, among other countries, has taken steps to limit its use in skincare products while the FDA in the United States has banned it entirely.

Triclosan is a preservative and an anti-bacterial agent used in 1,600 cosmetics and personal care products in Canada – including things like anti-bacterial soaps, hand washes, acne care, and deodorants. Increasingly, scientific evidence shows that it is harmful to the environment as well as humans.

As a result, this is the rarest ingredient you’ll find on this list, but you should be aware of any products that have it since there may be some still available and it is currently legal to use.

What Next?
Avoiding these ingredients may help you to avoid further skin irritation and acne breakouts that often follow.

  1. Take ten minutes to go through your current cosmetics and skin care products to see if they have any of these ingredients.
  2. When shopping for new products be on the lookout for cosmetics or products that’s exclude these ingredients.
  3. Remember everyone has unique skin that reacts differently to ingredients. When trying a new product, you should always follow the instructions carefully and complete a spot test.

Incorporating Benzagel Into Your Morning Routine

It should be noted before we start that this list does not incorporate any specialized medicines or facial creams. It’s advised that you check with your doctor if you take any prescription facial medications or washes and how this may affect your daily routine.

Preparation

Cleanse your skin in the morning and in the evening to keep your pores clear and your face fresh. Your cleanser may vary based on skin type, but with all cleansers, the general consensus is to apply them using an upward, circular motion so as to prevent wrinkles from forming. Make sure your hands are clean in order to prevent excess dirt from entering your pores. If you have very sensitive skin, using only water would also do the trick!

Regular exfoliation helps to keep the pores free of excess skin cells and oil. Exfoliation removes dead skin cell buildup, reduces the formation of comedones, and helps smooth and soften the skin.

General Skin Care

Astringents or toners can help remove excess oil, and some even contain acne-fighting ingredients. Apply toner to a cotton ball or pad and gently smooth over the face and neck to help remove any leftover makeup, cleanser residue, and oil. But if toners or astringents seem to over-dry or irritate your skin, don’t use them.

Acne Care

Smooth on your acne treatment creams as directed. This could be a medication prescribed by your doctor, or an over-the-counter acne gel or cream. Let the medication absorb or dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Controlling acne relies on a two-pronged approach: a consistent daily skin care routine plus effective acne treatment medications.

Final Steps

This is where you will do all of your makeup, sunscreen, and anti-aging moisturizer. It’s important to use these products at the end, and some people apply acne medication incorrectly at the end because they believe they will rub off the acne medication. On the contrary, as long as you apply it correctly you want to keep it beneath your makeup and additional topical products to make sure it is working.

Many people with oily skin steer clear of moisturizers. But moisturizing is a good thing, even if you’re acne-prone. A good, oil-free moisturizer applied at the end of your process won’t trigger breakouts, and could in fact help ease dryness, flakiness, and peeling caused by acne treatments on sensitive skin.
